Veena Raghavan

Falls Church, Virginia

Veena Raghavan(1938-) was born in Greenwich, Connecticut and spent her rearing years in India, England, Switzerland and France. When she was 16 years old, she received an early introduction to clay, when she worked as a sculptor through a class her mother was taking to study ceramics in France. After high school, she attended Geneva University, Switzerland to study to be a translator and interpreter. In 1960, the Father of the East Indian Pottery Movement and family friend, Sardar Gurcharan Singh, would introduce her to wheel work. In 1976, she settled in New York with her husband and children. She worked and sold her work through the Potter's Wheel in Queens, New York, as well as sold through many other galleries in the New York City area before moving to Virginia, where she currently resides. Her work is primarily functional in content and marked by her potent organic carving and powerful glaze painted designs. Veena has also worked in other mediums, such as a sculpture, painting and poetry in addition to her functional ceramics. A portion of her exhibition record includes: Goblets and 2X2X2 Exhibitions, Gallery 10, Rockford, Illinois; Basket Exhibition, Artlink, Fort Wayne, Indiana; Holiday Ornament Exhibition, Palmer Museum of Art, University Park Pennsylvania; Works of Faith Exhibition, Liturgical Art Guild, Columbus, Ohio; Orton Cone Box Show, 2002 and 2008; Light'em Up Show, The Clayground, Blandford, Massachusetts; Illustrated Tales for the Holiday Time, Bodzin Arts Gallery, JCC of Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Virginia; Arlington Library Show, Arlington, Virginia, 2003 and 2005, Summer Salon, Ellipse Gallery, Arlington, Virginia, 2002, 2003, 2004 2006 and 2007 and Cyberclay International Exhibit in conjunction with NCECA 2007, Gallery Janjobe, Louisville, Kentucky.
