Kim VanZyll, CZT

Carson City, Nevada

Kim was born Kimberly Ann Waters to Jim and Dorothy, and raised in Fenton Michigan. The oldest of four children, she embraced all types of art throughout her schooling and Girl Scout years.  Her first official art exhibition was held during the Junior Miss Pageant at Fenton High School. Sitting in the audience, her Dad was extremely proud; while the audience was probably bored to tears!

Kim met her husband Gary in 1978, and they married in 1983. They both worked in the family portrait photography business for several years…leading to their move to the Seattle area. Putting her artistic talents aside, Kim realized her gift and passion for customer service and sales in the retail industry for The Bon Marche’, (now Macy’s). They relocated to Bellingham, Washington…enjoying sailing, hiking, and the beautiful Northwest. Kim dabbled in the arts again as a makeup artist and counter manager for Estee Lauder Cosmetics; winning awards from the New York office and Regional division.

After many years of struggle, Kim and Gary were blessed with a baby boy; Zachary James in 1993. A short move back to Michigan led to their relocation to Carson City, Nevada to be near Kim’s Mom. As a Cub Scout den mother, arts and crafts crept back into Kim’s life. Zach showed artistic talent from an early age, and continued throughout school and into Junior college. Kim encouraged and kept Zach well supplied in art materials…while yearning for her own connection with art. And then un-expectantly Zentangle came into her life! It was an immediate connection that took her back to those well-loved art classes in school.

She taught herself Zentangle…devouring everything from the founders, the internet and books. Kim taught some of the clients through her work at Carson Tahoe Hospital. The realization that this type of art was also therapeutic was extremely rewarding. Gary encouraged her to take the next step and become a Certified Zentangle Teacher, a CZT. In October 2014 she, along with 107 others, made the commitment. Traveling to Providence, Rhode Island and learning from the founders, Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts was such a trip of joy, accreditation and empowerment!

While working full time for Carson Tahoe Hospital, Kim has continued to teach the Zentangle Art Method to all ages. It brings her great joy to awake the “artist within” each of her students. Along this journey, Kim has empowered and made many new friends. Her own personal talent and growth is evident in the progression of her art. You may reach out to Kim through her business, “Tangle Wonders”…take a Zentangle class yourself…you will love it and it may even change your life!
